Exodus 14:5-30

They said to Moses, “Weren’t there enough graves in Egypt that you took us away to die in the desert? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt like this?” - Exodus 14:11 (CEB)

While I expected to face challenges, I never anticipated that I would regret accepting God’s call to be a medical doctor. From the demanding schedules to the overwhelming workload of medical school, it’s a wonder that so many students persevere. I reached the point of almost quitting when I failed a course in my first year of pre-clinical training. I felt as if God had brought me to medical school only to fail. I would have been better off if I had chosen an easier path, I thought.

Doesn’t that sound familiar? “What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt like this?”

God brought the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, leading them to the land promised to their forefathers. But when they got to the Red Sea, the Egyptians pursuing them, they began to regret the day they stepped foot out of Egypt.

When the journey to fulfilling my God-given dream became challenging in ways I didn’t anticipate, I learned that just because God calls me to something doesn’t mean it will be easy. And just because I hit a roadblock along the way doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road. God can make a way where there seems to be no way. Through it all, I have learned that God is faithful and that God can be trusted.
