Lectionary Week
September 14–20, 2026
Scripture Overview

Each of the passages for this week has a way of drawing us into curiosity about how God might most palpably show up in the places where we experience a gap between where we are and where we want to be or think we should be. God provides sustenance for the Israelites as they experience the wilderness that exists between their deliverance from slavery and the Promised Land, and the psalmist praises God’s glorious deeds. Paul longs to be with Christ but recognizes his separation provides him the opportunity to serve others. In Matthew, Jesus tells a parable that challenges our understanding of equal access to the kingdom. These passages invite us to question our ideas about how we think life should go versus the reality of what is. The gaps in time or space between where we are and where we want to be can become places that remind us to see joy amidst the suffering and difficulties of life.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Exodus 16:2-15. When have you found yourself in the wilderness? How did God meet you there? Were you always able to notice God’s presence?
Read Psalm 105:1-6, 37-45. When have you fallen away from seeking God and God’s strength? What helps restore your seeking?
Read Philippians 1:21-30. How have you experienced God’s joy even in the midst of suffering?
Read Matthew 20:1-16. When have you struggled with the vastness of God’s grace? When have you felt as if God has been more generous with other people? How did you handle it?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Psalm 105:1-6, 37-45

1 Give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make his deeds known to all people! 2 Sing to God; sing praises to the Lord; dwell on all his wondrous works! 3 Give praise to God’s holy name! Let the hearts rejoice of all those seeking the LORD! 4 Pursue the LORD and his strength; seek his face always! 5 Remember the wondrous works he has done, all his marvelous works, and the justice he declared 6 you who are the offspring of Abraham, his servant, and the children of Jacob, his chosen ones. 37 Then God brought Israel out, filled with silver and gold; not one of its tribes stumbled. 38 Egypt celebrated when they left, because the dread of Israel had come upon them. 39 God spread out clouds as a covering; gave lightning to provide light at night. 40 The people asked, and God brought quail; God filled them full with food from heaven. 41 God opened the rock and out gushed water flowing like a river through the desert! 42 Because God remembered his holy promise to Abraham his servant, 43 God brought his people out with rejoicing, his chosen ones with songs of joy. 44 God gave them the lands of other nations; they inherited the wealth of many peoples 45 all so that they would keep his laws and observe his instructions. Praise the LORD!

It never ceases to amaze me how much I forget to search for God and God’s strength. The psalmist sings a song of praise for all of God’s works, calling the listener to tell the stories of God’s deliverance over and over as a way to remember and praise. This...

Holy and loving God, bring my focus to you constantly so that I might remember all the marvels you have done and find strength in you. Amen.
