Lectionary Week
July 13–19, 2026
Scripture Overview

This week’s readings guide us to the eighth Sunday after Pentecost. Just as God promised land and descendants to Abraham, God confirms these same promises to Abraham’s grandson, Jacob. The psalmist meditates on and takes comfort in the fact that God knows everything and is everywhere, asking God to reveal sins from which the psalmist needs to turn. The Romans passage continues Paul’s reflection on the life in the Spirit. Because we are children of God, we cry out with confidence that God will hear and answer. Jesus tells a parable in Matthew concerning the final judgment. He says that the wicked will be taken first, then the righteous will be gathered together.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Genesis 28:10-19a. Identify a time when you recognized God’s plan for you.
Read Psalm 139:1-12, 23-24. List three moments in the psalm when you connect with God’s presence. What is holding you back from inviting God to search your heart?
Read Romans 8:12-25. Paul emphasizes hope. Explain the significance of hope for believers.
Read Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43. Why is it challenging to know the truth about someone?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Romans 8:18-25

18 I believe that the present suffering is nothing compared to the coming glory that is going to be revealed to us. 19 The whole creation waits breathless with anticipation for the revelation of God’s sons and daughters. 20 Creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice—it was the choice of the one who subjected it—but in the hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from slavery to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of God’s children. 22 We know that the whole creation is groaning together and suffering labor pains up until now. 23 And it’s not only the creation. We ourselves who have the Spirit as the first crop of the harvest also groan inside as we wait to be adopted and for our bodies to be set free. 24 We were saved in hope. If we see what we hope for, that isn’t hope. Who hopes for what they already see? 25 But if we hope for what we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.

Paul waves the flag of victory when stating that there is no comparison of suffering in this world to the magnificence of what will come. The revelation of the next world with Christ is far greater than any suffering experienced in this world. Yet the suffering is not mild. Paul...
