Scripture Overview

As humans, we rely so much on our senses that it is sometimes difficult to believe something we have not directly experienced. We may not have seen Jesus, but through the words and actions of his followers, we experience his love and grace. In Acts, Peter quotes the psalm, boldly sharing about God’s presence in human life and the powerful expression of that presence in Jesus. The verses in First Peter point to the inheritance that God has in store for us. God’s grace sustains us when we face trials. Lastly, the passage from John shows Jesus meeting Thomas where he was while stressing the importance of believing even without seeing him.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Acts 2:14a, 22-32. Whose faith story has influenced you in your faith journey? Who can benefit from listening to your faith story?
Read Psalm 16. Reflect on a time when you encountered a disaster. What prayers did you utter? How did God answer your prayers? How can you be an answer to the prayers of others experiencing a similar situation?
Read 1 Peter 1:3-9. What trials have you faced that eventually strengthened your faith?
Read John 20:19-31. When have you wrestled with doubt? How did other Christ followers help you deal with deep faith questions?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Psalm 16:1-11

1 Protect me, God, because I take refuge in you. 2 I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord. Apart from you, I have nothing good.” 3 Now as for the “holy ones” in the land, the “magnificent ones” that I was so happy about; 4 let their suffering increase because they hurried after a different god. I won’t participate in their blood offerings; I won’t let their names cross my lips. 5 You, LORD, are my portion, my cup; you control my destiny. 6 The property lines have fallen beautifully for me; yes, I have a lovely home. 7 I will bless the LORD who advises me; even at night I am instructed in the depths of my mind. 8 I always put the LORD in front of me; I will not stumble because he is on my right side. 9 That’s why my heart celebrates and my mood is joyous; yes, my whole body will rest in safety 10 because you won’t abandon my life to the grave; you won’t let your faithful follower see the pit. 11 You teach me the way of life. In your presence is total celebration. Beautiful things are always in your right hand.

I grew up in the northeastern part of the Philippines, which is visited by about twenty typhoons annually. When we heard the forecast on the radio, we would hunker down for a day or two and wait for the typhoon to arrive. The sky would go dark as heavy clouds...
