Scripture Overview

Scripture consistently portrays faith as an identity-forming spiritual quality that acts and speaks. Isaiah demonstrates unwavering confidence in God, regardless of circumstances, and a mission to be light in the world. The psalmist’s faith produces hope in God’s deliverance and “a new song” that proclaims God’s salvation to others. Paul’s portrait of faith includes an identity and giftedness that enable believers to fulfill God’s purposes. The Gospel of John reminds us of the power of testimony in pointing others to Christ.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Isaiah 49:1-7. How does your faith give you confidence?
Read Psalm 40:1-11. What does your “new song” of faith say?
Read 1 Corinthians 1:1-9. How does your faith keep you from harmful distractions?
Read John 1:29-42. How do you point others to Jesus?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Hence, I will also appoint you as light to the nations so that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth. 7 The LORD, redeemer of Israel and its holy one, says to one despised, rejected by nations, to the slave of rulers: Kings will see and stand up; commanders will bow down on account of the LORD, who is faithful, the holy one of Israel, who has chosen you.

The opening verses of Isaiah 49 record a turning point in the life of Israel, God’s servant. After objecting to God’s call to the point of weariness, he acknowledges the insufficiency of his own strength and embraces the strength of God. He accepts the honor of being the one who...
