Scripture Overview

The Hebrew scriptures act as the voice of God declaring that faith must align with behavior. To worship God without forming one’s life around justice is to bring empty and hypocritical words to the altar. While God delights in the praise of the people, God delights only when that praise is met with a life aimed at justice and mercy. The epistle reading harkens back to the heroes of old, whose faith in God’s promises led them to get up and follow. In the Gospel, we hear the words of Jesus giving us the kingdom of heaven now. We receive a call to readiness for whatever may come next.

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

:
• Read Isaiah 1:1, 10-20. Do you ever worry whether God really listens to your prayers? How do your prayers reflect your life lived in faith?
• Read Psalm 50:1-8, 22-23. Are there things in your life you’d prefer to keep hidden? What would it look like for God’s light to shine in your darkest corners?
• Read Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16. How would you describe God’s promises? How do God’s promises motivate your actions?
• Read Luke 12:32-40. Do you ever find yourself aimlessly wandering through life? What steps could you take today to be more alert to God’s presence and love for you?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Psalm 50:1-8, 22-23

1 From the rising of the sun to where it sets, God, the LORD God, speaks, calling out to the earth. 2 From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines brightly. 3 Our God is coming; he won’t keep quiet. A devouring fire is before him; a storm rages all around him. 4 God calls out to the skies above and to the earth in order to judge his people: 5 “Bring my faithful to me, those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” 6 The skies proclaim his righteousness because God himself is the judge. Selah 7 “Listen, my people, I will now speak; Israel, I will now testify against you. I am God—your God! 8 I’m not punishing you for your sacrifices or for your entirely burned offerings, which are always before me. 22 So consider this carefully, all you who forget God, or I’ll rip you to pieces with no one to deliver you: 23 The one who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving is the one who honors me. And it is to the one who charts the correct path that I will show divine salvation.”

This psalm is a call to inspection. Like the rising of the sun, God’s light is on the rise. When God’s light shines, all will be revealed. This inspection is specifically for people of faith, the ones who have made a covenant with God. Faith and action must align if...

Light of the world, shine on my darkest places and speak the truth to me. Align my practices with my love for you, that your light may shine through me into this world. Amen.
