Lectionary Week
June 5–11, 2023
Scripture Overview

The readings for this week share the theme of our faith and God’s faithfulness. In Genesis, God calls Abram to leave his country and promises to make of him a great nation. Abram has faith in God’s faithfulness and goes. In the Gospel, Matthew follows Jesus immediately, and there are two stories of healings that show great faithfulness. In Romans, Paul explains that God calls Abram and Matthew and us—even though we are all sinners—and reckons our faith as righteousness. The psalmist reminds us that all God’s “work is done in faithfulness.”

Questions and Suggestions for Reflection

Read Genesis 12:1-9. Think of a time you chose to follow God’s leading. How were you blessed by the decision?
Read Psalm 33:1-12. Where have you seen God’s faithful
actions in your life? Among the nations?
Read Romans 4:13-25. How is the promise that our faith will
be reckoned to us as righteousness good news for you?
Read Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26. How is Jesus calling you to get up and follow? What would that kind of faith look like?

Respond by posting a prayer.

Romans 4:18-25

18 When it was beyond hope, he had faith in the hope that he would become the father of many nations, in keeping with the promise God spoke to him: That’s how many descendants you will have. 19 Without losing faith, Abraham, who was nearly 100 years old, took into account his own body, which was as good as dead, and Sarah’s womb, which was dead. 20 He didn’t hesitate with a lack of faith in God’s promise, but he grew strong in faith and gave glory to God. 21 He was fully convinced that God was able to do what he promised. 22 Therefore, it was credited to him as righteousness. 23 But the scripture that says it was credited to him wasn’t written only for Abraham’s sake. 24 It was written also for our sake, because it is going to be credited to us too. It will be credited to those of us who have faith in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was handed over because of our mistakes, and he was raised to meet the requirements of righteousness for us.

Ever read a really good novel where everything seems to go wrong for the protagonist? Most epic novels and comic books start that way. A great person is down on their luck or faces seemingly insurmountable odds. From Frodo of the Shire to Bruce Wayne to Emma Woodhouse, well-written characters...

God of Abraham, infinitely faithful to your word, take away my sense of weakness or distrust. Bring me into a life of promise in you. I offer my praise to your glory today in hopes that I will remember that I, too, am justified in Christ. Amen.
